All my adult life I have belonged to an art society of some sort, I think I even joined the art club in junior school. My husband belongs to car clubs and I belong to art societies. We sometimes visit each other’s events. What ever obsession you have there’s a group for that.
I joined the Welland Valley Art Society before the internet was in full swing, and have been exhibiting with them ever since.
This week sees the joyous Autumn Exhibition. The standard is high and there’s always the jeopardy that you might not get your work selected so I strive to put my best paintings in. I put 5 in this time and all got selected. Yippee! One even got a commendation! It’s not always like that.
So now the exhibition is in full swing. We had the preview on Sunday morning, a glass of wine and weird looking nibbles, a short speech and prize giving by our chairman, and so much chatter reverberating round the paintings and sculptures.
The exhibition carries on until October 19th, 10 am to 5 pm at the Stamford Arts Centre and everyone is welcome.
Of course you have to do your bit stewarding, but that is part of the whole experience. There have been times when I’ve struggled to fit it in but it is always been a delight. The gallery is lovely, light and airy, there’s a cafe, and another member to chat to about art, and lots of visitors saying how wonderful and inspiring the the paintings and sculptures are.
After an exhibition like this I am invariably left with a warm glow whether I sell anything or not. I am part of a community of like minded people and that is worth it’s weight in gold.
